What causes APDS
APDS is a condition where the immune system doesn’t work properly. This is medically considered a primary immunodeficiency (PI).
When the immune system isn’t working the way it should, people with a PI can get sick more often and might have the same infections over and over again. This can also lead to more frequent visits to the doctor for those with APDS.
What does it look like in the body?
It usually starts with changes in genes PIK3CD or PIK3R1. Because of these changes in the genes, an immune pathway (PI3K delta) becomes hyperactive. This means the body’s immune cells (B and T cells) don’t grow and work properly.
This can create too many immature cells and not enough healthy ones for your body. As a result, people with APDS have a hard time fighting off infections.
Having a rare disease can be hard and you may feel alone. However, please know there are other people like you
living with APDS.
How could APDS affect you?
People with APDS can suffer from a wide range of signs and symptoms.
- APDS is a progressive disease, if left untreated, it could continue to develop or worsen over time. This could lead to permanent, life-threatening organ damage or lymphoma (a type of blood cancer that affects the lymph nodes)
